November 2026 Presenter: Mike Zhao

Tuesday November 3rd 2026 at noon EST via ZOOM

Emotions, their regulation, and working with the human voice

The throat tightens before an audition. The breath catches on a sad phrase. A student breaks down mid-lesson. Emotion lives in the voice, and craft of every performer and coach are submerged within it, whether they mean to or not.

Over the past three decades, affective neuroscience has transformed how we understand these moments: what an emotion is, what it does to the body, and how it shapes breath, posture, and sound. In this one-hour workshop, Mike Zhao translates that research into tools for the studio and the stage. Participants will gain a better understanding of how emotions impact their work, and how they can better work with emotions.

Mike Zhao has been a movement specialist since 2016, working with a variety of patients with movement dysfunctions. He is Applied Integration Body Trained and a credentialed clinician of the Postural Restoration Institute. Mike views clinical work as inherently interdisciplinary, and that no single perspective holds all the answers. This perspective has led him to study widely across kinesiology, neuroscience, fascia research, and psychoanalysis. Mike holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Columbia University. Beyond his clinical work, Mike facilitates interdisciplinary study groups for clinicians pursuing innovation in their practice.
